Vaginal Davis
Vaginal Davis is internationally known as a performance and visual artist. She is an originator of the homo-core punk movement and an icon of gender-queer music. Davis first gained notoriety in the late 1970s, primarily as the front woman for various art-punk bands, including the Afro Sisters, who were inspired by Angela Davis, and as the publisher of zines. A cultural antagonist and erotic provocateur, Davis’s practice critiques both the art gallery system and the larger cultural trend that it mirrors. She is a key proponent of the disruptive performance aesthetic known as terrorist drag, and has lectured and taught at numerous schools around the world. Her work has been shown at spaces such as the New Museum, New York; Documenta 14, Kassel; The Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; the Getty Center, Los Angeles; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Tate Modern, London; and the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco, among many others. In recent years she has hosted and curated the performative film event Rising Stars, Falling Stars at the Arsenal Institut für Film und Videokunst in Berlin.
